Ellie had rushed over from work, and had been delighted to find that Mr. Dobson, Nat, and Jinian had already begun setting up for the party. The old cowboy had already fired up the grill in preparation and the girls had set out bread baskets and salads to start. There were tables with hurricane lamps set up near the house, and some additional ones down by the pond. And with clear skies, it was going to be perfect for stargazing even if you never left the table.

Several of the horses were frolicking in the paddock, and she wondered if any of their guests might like to go riding. She was definitely game, and had decided to try riding Bucky this evening. He was a beautiful Palomino, but also quite mischievous too. She was still getting to know the horses and Mr. Dobson had helped her choose which horses would be best to introduce to their guests.

While she waited for Michael and the others to arrive, she climbed up onto the fence of the paddock and watched the horses play.

"It was perfect timing, like it was meant to be. Jake really didn't want to leave this place, but he couldn't afford to maintain it. I can, and it's exactly what I needed, but I definitely can't handle running it day-to-day. It's been a good match-up so far."

"Excellent - right place, right time. You should go buy a lotto ticket, Michael."

He's apparently going to go ride Beer shortly - because, well... the horse is called Beer!

"The lottery isn't something I'm ever likely to need, but I could buy tickets for friends, I guess." He laughs.

And Beer is a very large, very good-natured horse, and everybody should have a ride on Beer, definitely.

"I've noticed that a lot of the folks in the nexus don't have any need for money. It's kinda interesting to see - a lot of folks have their charitable side come out a lot easier then."

"I've met some in there that do, but... it doesn't tend to last very long. It's a little like the Nexus is a land of plenty for people who want it to be."

He nods at Nat, who's making up a plate of food for herself now that she and Jinian have finished setting things up.

"I found her wandering around in the Nexus, and ended up bringing her here so she could have a safe place to live. I have a feeling Jake's decided he's her grandfather now."

"It's what you make of it - that sounds about right."

Jason grins at the story snippet. "Sounds good to me. Having a home would rock - family.. yeah."

"She hasn't been forthcoming with very many details but apparently her mother was murdered not long ago. It took a little work, but she's agreed to 'talk about stuff' with me once a week."

He never does manage to completely stop being a psychiatrist.

"Family is very important... which was probably an awful thing of me to just say like that, wasn't it?"

"Aw, man. That's horrible. I hope you can help her with that."

On the subject of mothers, Jason's voice is a little flat. Emotionless, or at least, the semblance of it. The Doc probably knows the type.

"... Dunno, man."

Yeah, that really wasn't a good topic choice. "Sorry about that."

He glances Nat's way again.

"Yeah, hopefully I can help her. She's a nice kid..."

Something to say that isn't a downer... he needs to find something... but what?

"Oh, and... as you said the other day, you can have a therapy safeword if you ever do sessions." He grins, hoping that little joke will pick things back up some.

"Hey - you're one of the few non-crazy psychiatri... do you perscribe meds or not? I get the two mixed up sometimes. You'll do her right, in the end."

He gets a thoughtful look, until the last joke, and then he grins.

"SSC, even in therapy. Yeah, I'm sure you'll do good. Heh."
